Columbia Neurosurgery's Gamma Knife Co-Director Dr. Tony Wang Wins Prestigious ASTRO Fellowship
Honored for his contributions to the field of radiation oncology
Earlier this week, Dr. Tony Wang, Co-Director of the Center for Radiosurgery, Chair of the Quality and Patient Safety Committee in Radiation Oncology at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Professor of Radiation Oncology has been named a 2023 Fellow of
ASTRO. “This distinguished honor is in recognition of Dr. Wang’s significant service to ASTRO and your contributions to the field of radiation oncology,” said Beth Erikson, MD, Chair, ASTRO Fellows Selection Committee. Dr. Wang and his fellow recipients from around the world were honored with their families at ASTRO’s 65th Annual Meeting in San Diego, where they were recognized for outstanding contributions to the field, receiving ASTRO Fellow sashes and pins.
Says Dr. Wang on this recent honor, “I am humbled to receive this recognition from ASTRO and thank my mentors and mentees.”
ASTRO is considered the premier radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 10,000 members who are physicians, nurses, biologists, physicists, radiation therapists, dosimetrists and other health care professionals who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. The organization’s mission is “to advance the practice of radiation oncology by promoting excellence in patient care, providing opportunities for educational and professional development, promoting research and disseminating research results and representing radiation oncology in a rapidly evolving health care environment.”
Dr. Tony Wang has dedicated his career to radiation oncology, precisely Gamma Knife procedures, working with the Department of Neurosurgery and Dr. Michael Sisti, James G. McMurtry Professor of Neurological Surgery at Columbia Medical Center.
The team at Columbia Neurosurgery continues to innovate its Gamma Knife Program. Gamma Knife is a safe, non-invasive, technologically advanced device for treating deep-seated brain tumors and an increasing number of conditions—including those that were once considered inoperable and those for which other therapies are ineffective—without incisions and with little or no pain. Gamma Knife treatment is offered as part of a complete set of precision radiation therapy techniques. A team of neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists with specialized expertise in Gamma Knife treatment and other methods collaborate to determine the best approach for each patient. More than 5,000 patients have been successfully treated with the Gamma Knife to date.
