Please Welcome Dr. Dean Chou!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Dean Chou, MD, the new Chief of the Neurosurgery Spine Division and Professor of Neurological Surgery at Columbia University. Dr. Chou joins us from UCSF, where he was the Associate Director of the Neurospine Center and Professor of Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery. 

After earning his medical degree at UCSF, Chou completed his residency training in neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Chou then went on to complete a fellowship in complex spinal surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute before returning to UCSF as faculty. 

Dr. Chou specializes in complex spine surgery, caring for patients with scoliosis, spinal deformity, spinal tumors, and degenerative conditions of the spine. Dr. Chou is an expert in minimally invasive surgery, pioneering novel minimally invasive techniques to treat complex spinal disorders. 

Dr. Chou is a nationally and internationally known spinal neurosurgeon. He serves on the editorial boards of The Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, PLOS ONE, and Neurosurgery, and he is on the advisory board of the journal, Spine. Dr. Chou has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally, and his publications have been featured as cover articles for various journals. Dr. Chou prioritizes outstanding patient care, and he has been voted by colleagues as one of the “Best Doctors in America” for 10 consecutive years. He has also received the Harold Rosegay Teaching Award twice for his dedication towards teaching residents.
