What is cerebrovascular neurosurgery?
Surgical procedures performed on vessels that supply blood to the brain are types of cerebrovascular neurosurgery.
At Columbia Neurosurgery, highly trained cerebrovascular specialists evaluate and treat patients suffering from diseases that affect the brain’s blood vessels. Our team of physicians includes cerebrovascular neurosurgeons, endovascular neurosurgeons and interventional neuroradiologists. (See below for more information about these areas of expertise.)
What conditions do we treat at the Cerebrovascular Center?
At Columbia’s Cerebrovascular Center, we treat vascular disorders of the brain and spine, including:
What procedures do the doctors perform at the Cerebrovascular Center?
At the Cerebrovascular Center, the latest research and state-of-the-art technology enable our specialists to offer patients microsurgery and endovascular procedures to treat bleeding aneurysms or vascular malformations. We can embolize, clip, remove, irradiate or divert blood flow from aneurysms and vascular malformations in order to prevent life-threatening bleeding.
Surgical approaches to carotid artery disease and atherosclerosis include endarterectomy and carotid artery angioplasty and stenting, either of which may be helpful in providing renewed blood flow to prevent stroke.
We can also revascularize regions of the brain affected by conditions that reduce blood supply, such as moyamoya, to prevent further damage.
Why choose the Columbia Neurosurgery Cerebrovascular Center?
Studies consistently demonstrate that experienced surgeons and interventional radiologists at neuroscience centers of excellence achieve the best possible patient outcomes.
Our Cerebrovascular Center is one such center of excellence. Our team members have a variety of backgrounds: Cerebrovascular neurosurgeons are brain surgeons who use the latest technology to perform traditional operations on blood vessels. Endovascular neurosurgeons are brain surgeons with specialized training in performing minimally invasive procedures from inside the blood vessels. Interventional neuroradiologists are radiologists who perform procedures from inside blood vessels in the brain.
Our surgeons and interventional radiologists work in precise areas of expertise within the field of cerebrovascular surgery. This complementary set of individual specialties, in combination with a cooperative team approach to treatment, means that our patients receive the benefit of cerebrovascular surgical experience that is both deep and wide.
