Minimally invasive neurosurgery is one of Dr. Marc Otten’s specialties. Using technology like lasers and endoscopes, he performs precise operations through tiny incisions.
The shorter recovery time associated with minimally invasive surgery has made it very popular with patients.
But performing minimally invasive surgery takes skill. Surgeons must master the use of new instruments, new techniques, and a new set of surgical pros and cons. For example, the recovery time for minimally invasive surgery may be shorter, but the surgery itself may take longer, which may not be advisable for some patients.
Thanks to his unique fellowship training in endoscopic and microsurgical neurosurgery, Dr. Otten is very familiar with these and other techniques and considerations. He now enjoys instructing other neurosurgeons in them.
At the most recent convention of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, he was part of the faculty for a course called “Endoscopic and Keyhole Approaches to the Anterior Skull Base.” During the two-day course of lectures and labs, Dr. Otten helped colleagues from around the world learn and practice some of the techniques he routinely uses.
When he operates on the skull base for problems such as, pituitary adenomas, meningiomas, chordomas or craniopharyngiomas, for instance, Dr. Otten does not need to make a large incision. Instead, he accesses the target area via a patient’s nose, or by making a small incision near a patient’s eyebrow. He guides an endoscope or camera at the end of a thin tube, through the incision and to the surgical site. The camera transmits images to a monitor that Dr. Otten watches while deftly maneuvering specialized surgical tools.
Dr. Otten was pleased to have a chance to share his expertise with others. “It was a pleasure and an honor to be on the faculty of this course,” he says.
Dr. Otten’s practice is devoted to tumors of the brain and spine, skull base tumors, gliomas, meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, pituitary tumors, craniopharyngiomas, Chiari malformation, and microvascular decompression (MVD) for trigeminal neuralgia, and hemifacial spasm. He also treats degenerative spine disease, intervertebral disc disease, hydrocephalus, and neurotrauma.
