The article, Gamma Knife Brain Surgery Promising for Severe OCD, published this month here, reviews the promising results of a recent study about a procedure called Gamma Ventral Capsulotomy (GVC).
During GVC, neurosurgeons and psychiatrists use the Gamma Knife to deliver highly focused beams of radiation to specific tracts in the frontal lobes of the brain.
As one of the few neurosurgeons in the country who performs this procedure, Dr. Sheth was sought for the Medscape Medical News article.
“It is essential for the community of health care practitioners taking care of these patients to communicate openly using media outlets such as these, to exchange information,” says Dr. Sheth. “There are so few centers surgically treating these patients that communication is vital to advancing our understanding and improving care.”
For Medscape, Dr. Sheth details the procedure and says the treatment shows promise. He cautions though, that it is complex, patients need to be chosen carefully, and treatment should be sought out only at specialized medical centers.
