Before Kathy Wakile was a Real Housewife of New Jersey, she was a mother. And a decade ago, during a family vacation in Florida, Wakile’s 10-year-old daughter, Victoria, collapsed on the beach.

At the ER in Florida, Victoria was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Wakile family returned to New York, and the tumor was removed by Dr. Neil Feldstein, Director of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Center at Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The surgery has been on the Wakile family’s minds recently, and not only because they just passed its ten-year anniversary. It’s because earlier this year, 20-year-old Victoria found herself once again a patient of Dr. Feldstein.

As Kathy Wakile relates in a recent interview with OK! Magazine, Victoria had been feeling “off.” An MRI revealed that she had a benign brain tumor called an astrocytoma. Dr. Feldstein removed the tumor, and the energetic Victoria was soon up and on her way again, spending time with friends and returning to her studies.

In the OK! interview, Kathy Wakile and her husband Richie express their gratitude for the excellent care their daughter received from Dr. Feldstein at age 10 and again at age 20. “[T]o me he’s King Feldstein,” Richie says in the article. “He saved her.” The Wakiles also had high praise for Columbia’s nursing team. A decade ago, the nurses cared attentively for 10-year-old Victoria, spending extra time “talking to her and making her feel that everything [was] going to be okay,” says Kathy Wakile. This excellent care really inspired the 10-year-old girl: Victoria is now in nursing school.

Her second experience as a patient in the Pediatric Neurosurgery Center left Victoria even more certain that nursing school was the right choice for her. Her mother recalls in OK!, “Every nurse that came in, [Victoria] said, ‘This is really my calling. This is what I want to be doing,’”
