Every year Vitals, a website dedicated to helping patients find information about doctors and healthcare options, analyzes millions of patient ratings to determine which doctors are the top choice of patients in their communities.
This year 14 doctors (six of our neurosurgeons and eight doctors from The Spine Hospital) from the Department of Neurosurgery at Columbia University Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital have been awarded Vitals Patients’ Choice Awards.

This is quite an achievement, as only 7 percent of all doctors in the country were eligible for a Vitals Patients’ Choice Award this year. Vitals awarded the honor based on a list of quality metrics each doctor had to meet, plus the overall ratings the doctor received from patients for the year. In other words, only doctors whose patients consistently sing their praises make it to the final list.
This year Dr. Sean Lavine, Dr. Richard Anderson, Dr. Neil Feldstein, Dr. Guy McKhann and Dr. Michael Sisti each mark their fifth consecutive year of winning the Patients’ Choice Award. This is an outstanding achievement that highlights the standard of excellent care these doctors bring to their practices every day.
But on top of that, these doctors have all been awarded the Vitals Compassionate Doctor Award. This award honors physicians who have the highest ratings in both “Overall” and “Bedside Manner” categories. Not only did our Columbia neurosurgeons come out on top for patients’ overall choice, but they were recognized for their compassion and commitment to going above and beyond for patient care and comfort. This was Dr. Jeffrey Bruce’s, Dr. Michael Sisti’s and Dr. Richard Anderson’s fifth time to be honored as Compassionate Doctors.
In addition Dr. Michael Sisti and Dr. Christopher Mandigo earned a spot on Vitals’ “Top 10 Doctors” list for New York City, and several of our doctors earned an On-Time Doctor award for practices with the shortest wait times.
