Columbia Neurosurgeons Discuss the Latest in Brain Tumor Management

Dr. Bruce, Dr. Sonabend, Dr. Sisti

What’s new in the world of brain tumor management?

That is what Columbia’s neurosurgeons spoke about at the “Innovations and Updates in the Management of Brain Tumors” course at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York this month (March 2017).

The conference was a joint venture among Columbia University Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medical College.

Its purpose was to bring together physicians who frequently treat patients with brain tumors, including neurosurgeons, neurologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, to learn and share the latest advances in brain tumor management.

Faculty from both Columbia and Cornell presented the latest innovations in the research, diagnosis, management and treatment of brain tumors.

Dr. Adam Sonabend, from Columbia’s Brain Tumor Center, was one of the course directors. He gave a presentation on experimental therapies for malignant (cancerous) glioma brain tumors.

Columbia’s Dr. Jeffrey Bruce and Dr. Michael Sisti also presented at this course. Dr. Bruce spoke about surgical adjuncts—techniques that help make brain tumor surgery more effective. For example, Dr. Bruce is known for his work using a special dye that causes a brain tumor to glow green under blue fluorescent light, enabling him to see the tumor more easily so that he can remove it more effectively. (Learn more about that in our previous post here.)

Dr. Michael Sisti spoke about the latest strategies for managing and treating acoustic neuromas—rare, benign (noncancerous) tumors that often affect balance and hearing.

The daylong course was packed full of information about the very latest in brain tumor management.
